From Me to Me

by Alex Penuelas   Jan 9, 2018

I remember when you
Weren't so down on your luck.

I remember when you
We're the shining star
In all of the schools
That you have attended.

One of the top three choices
To be the next person
Who would go out in the world
And make it better.

I remember how proud your teachers were
Whenever you came into class
Fully prepared for the
Activities that would take place.

And how your family
Swelled with pride
With all of the good things
That were coming your way.

Then something along the way made you change.

I don't know what it was.

But it was something that caused you
To think that you were nothing
But a stepping stone.

Maybe it was because of that
One girl who was a
Snake in the grass who
Changed your entire
Outlook on friendships and
Potential relationships.

Maybe it was that one time
That you flunked and
Landed square on your face,
Shamefully having to
Go to the dean's office
And beg her for a
Second chance that she couldn't afford.

Maybe it was the fact
That you started to realize
How fragile and fleeting
This life really is
When you started to lose people
That were close to you.

Yeah, I get it,
Life hit you square in the face
With a relentless force
That matches how the
Waves on a stormy day
Crash into the rocks
On a cracked cliff.

But look,
You gotta remember
To get out of it.

Like you always have.

You know you got the
Potential to go out there
And prove that
You got what it takes
To keep moving forward.

You got the skills
And the knowledge to ensure
That you will no longer
Make those same mistakes.

You got the experience to learn
When to take a risk
And when to walk away
From a risky decision.

You have it inside you.

Tap into it.

And don't live your life
Pointing the fingers at others
For your own faults.

People every day
Try to find excuses for why
They aren't where they need to be
Instead of investing that energy
Into proactively changing their lives
Brick by brick.

You can do this.

Don't give up on me.
