The Scent of the Mulian Stream

by ddavidd   Jan 19, 2026

No one ever reaches justice
unless they discover it,
pure and unblemished,
in the darkest depths
of their own being.

Whoever defends injustice,
or diminishes it and looks away;
whoever hides it, excuses it,
or aligns with it
to remain beloved,
or to avoid becoming
the one who is named;
even one who is not repelled by it,
who does not recoil
into physical and moral nausea,

will never know
the fragrance of the Beloved,
will never sense
the scent of the Mulian stream.

As Rumi said:

This cry of the reed is fire, not wind,
whoever does not carry this fire
is nothing but wind.

Note:
The Mulian Stream was famed for its freshness and purity,
so sublime that its scent reminded the poet of heaven itself.
