Forget the Sky

They lifted him
Stitched his name into constellations
Etched his story in forever
Called greatness, called destiny
The measure of all things.
Distant
Untouchable
And of infinite loss

They pressed her down into the patient earth
told her to soften, to break, to carry
She became the ocean waves
Unyielding, strong, unpraised
The silver in the streams
Always moving, never still
Rock remembers the water that shaped it
And shapes she does

Each mountain holds the echo of her refusal
Each river bends with the memory of her name
She roars in wrathful vengeance
And playfully laps on the shore
For what is sky
Without something to rise from?
What is a star
Without a world to warm?

They said he was above her
But when the rains fall
When the rivers swell and the cliffs crack open
When the earth shifts and reminds the sky
That it is not alone
You can almost hear her laugh
Low and enduring as thunder beneath the ground

She was never beneath
She was everything
He could not own
