School through the Drop Outs P.O.V. 12/15

by Ashleigh Skye   Jun 9, 2006

Pretend like you actually know me,
that you're not just here to watch me crash,
did you know I dropped out of school today,
threw my uniform and books in the trash.

Did you know at school I was struggling,
some extra help they thought I should get,
but you didn't even go to hear what they'd say,
no matter who got angry or upset.

Did you know I used to get picked on,
by kids twice my size,
sadistic beatings and hurtful words,
the school was their haven for lies.

I felt like I was entering the lion's den,
with a slab of raw meat on my back,
and as soon as the shrill bell pierced the air,
they would being their assault, their attack.

But still I always ignored it,
showing up to their battle ground,
trying to stay strong when they lunged and pounced,
looking for your reassurance that was never around.

Even the teachers they judged me,
forced me to abandon my dream,
while shoving their ideas down my throat,
till I couldn't even think or scream.

The devil's play ground is what it is,
laced with false ideas, false hopes,
so by getting out while I still have the chance,
I can walk with my back away from the ropes.

No one knows my reason for doing it,
no one knows I had no choice,
taking my final steps down this hall,
the only way to get a hold of my voice.

I really like your series. (obsessing the negative a bit though, aren't there any 'happy' people in this school?). I know a few kids who dropped out of highschool. this one guy I know though, I think he'll do alright.

Powerful message! Your ability to put yourself in someone elses mind set and write from their POV is brilliant.
You have really touched on many reasons why kids quit school, it's not always because they are lazy.
This is quite eye opening and something many people need to read. It could really make a difference.
Take care and keep it up~Holly

Brilliant poem, i really love this series you're doing, it's so insightfull and thought provoking. i especially loved this line:

the school was their haven for lies.

i don't know why i like that line so much, but it really stood out to me.

fab poem, can't wait for the others.
