I am all for boycotting opening and closing ceremonies, but not the events themselves, the atheltes should be allowed to compete.

I find that opening ceremonies have become bigger better best and over indulgent and I normally get lost trying to interpret what the host country is trying to portray anyway, so if the individual sports people want to boycott that's ok by me.

The Olympics is just so a 12 people can make millions of dollars and keep certian corporations rich. I'd say everyone should boycott them the fact the symbol was drawn by Hitler and still used today should concern people.
Did you see what happened in San Fran? The torch runner got pushed to the sidewalk for pulling out a Free Tibet Flag. But it was not US guards that did it... it was Chinese special forces. In San Fran...

Steven Speilberg was suppose to be doing the opening ceremonies but decided that he wouldn't because of how China is treating Tibet.

I find it funny all of this is going on, yet no one did crap for Darfur.

I think the Olympic Games gives relevance and meaning to both athletes and non athletes lives world wide, many devoting their entire life to their sport. Sport gives hope, it gives pride to many including the country they represent. 99.9 percent of these people have no say in where the Olympics are held.

The Olympics helps promote change where sport is played on an equal footing no matter creed or race or colour. We've all know the Olympics were being held in China why wait till now to object.

The Olympics has always been heralded as a sign of hope and pride for all humanity. Let's not destroy that.

^^Because it is a health risk to the olymipians who will be there. Everything is polluted there, they have thousands of new cars on the roads everyday, the smog is so thick you can't see, the water is so polluted that if you touch it you will even be affected by it. Why risk harming yourself or anyone else due to the surroundings?

"Why would you boycott something that has gone on for centuries? i think it dumb."

Wow. And you think boycotting the olympics is dumb.

Joe has a valid point. If I was an olympian I would probably boycott it.

I am boycotting it, its wrong what they are doing, to tebetians, to their own people, to the enviorment, i think its disturbing that we went to the olymipics in *GERMANY* during the begining stages of the holocaust, are we just gona ignore everything so that we can make out "good ole boys" feel good?

Tibet is not a country, plain and simple it's part of china. The boycott would be how they are treating the native residence of that piece of land.

I think we should all start loking in our own back yard before we start throwing stones.

How many people die of injustice everyday, in Africa for example, i don't see too many here jumping up and down about that.

Well I guess that would depend on whether you're Chinese or Tibetan. The Chinese invaded Tibet. Tibetan's want their independance back and see the Olympics as an opportunity to remind the world that they have been trying to do this for the past 50 years.

They can fight all they want but no major country is going to help them but keep speaking to the ''globalist'' Dalia Lama. America and Canada wouldn't be able to stop trading with China they'd have to create jobs and give them to the lower class.. that's just not going to happen.

But they could pull a Lakota Indians, and start their own country inside a country... but I highly doubt China has the same laws as America :)
