Botched Body Piercings

Recently I’ve heard a rash of horror stories about botched body piercings. Here are the two I thought were the most alarming.

Several days ago an ER physician told me that he had just treated a 16 year old girl for an intensely painful infection that resulted from having her genitals pierced. He said he had previously treated other patients for piercing-related infections but this was the worst case he had seen.

Today the AP is reporting news of a 13-year-old Massachusetts girl who developed a severe infection after trying to pierce her own belly button. She had suffered incredible pain for nearly four weeks while fluids were oozing from her navel area. Her mother had refused to seek medical attention for her. When she was finally admitted to the hospital ER, she was emaciated, near death and had lost significant body weight. The mother now faces criminal charges for child endangerment.

If there is something to be learned from these sad experiences, it is that piercings do have risks and should be performed under safe, sterile and sanitary conditions, followed by properly hygienic post-piercing care. Self piercing methods, including the use of piercing kits, have a much higher potential for serious health hazards do piercings performed by skilled professionals.

Um... Hate to burst your preaching bubble, but I've done almost all of my own piercings and never once have I gotten one infected. The people who you talked about there were probably stupid and didn't know how to clean them. FYI - never get your junk pierced, cause that's just nasty - even on a girl. I'm done here, so have a nice day.

Bathe, idiot. And clean them out with alcohol. I've pierced my ears, my eyebrow, my nipples and my lip and still haven't got any problems.

Eh, a little, but it wasn't that bad. Sorry about the idiot comment. Got a litle frustrated. About the alcohol, just put it on a cottonball or one of those coton ball stick things and rub the hole with it. Do that everyday for a month after you get it done, then you can cut back to every two days or so...

Sea salt and warm water works great also, anti-bacterial soap and warm water. I have my nose and navel done, I didn't do them myself, but as long as you keep them clean you shouldn't have any problems.

No, not really. In the morning, I put gel an my hands and rake it through my hair until it's spiky and sticks. I'm no nonsense. Do it and get it over with. I don't like how girls sit in the bathroom for hours putting on their faces and playing with their hair. It's even worse when guys do it...
