metaphors and underlying meanings

do you ever feel like most of the metaphors and underlying meanings in poems go unnoticed? I first realized this last month when, due to scheduling conflicts, I was put in general english. I was utterly amazed when i realized how little poetry most people actully comprehend...Maybe it's just me, I dont know
