    I'm a strong believer in being self-taught.

I would suggest a visit to your local library and see if you can find a CD or DVD that teaches Spanish. They are available for all learning levels - elementary, intermediate and advanced. If you are comfortable with a particular one, you may want to buy it. You should also have a book on the essentials of Spanish grammar. Spanish grammar is more complex than English, but, to me, Spanish grammar seems more logical. As you learn, I would also recommend reading Spanish language newspapers and other publications. You can find many on the internet. I'd also suggest listening to/ watching Spanish language broadcasts. One caveat: There is a lot of corrupted Spanish used in the US. I'm something of a purist where language is concerned. So it annoys me when I hear or see words like 'watería' or 'marqueta' in common usage.

And now your first assignment IS: learn to count to 1000. ;-) Good luck.

Hi, I speak almost fluent spanish, having lived in Chile for nine years.
If you want, I can help you. At least you will be able to learn to read and write spanish, if not pronounce it.
I would also advice renting spanish-speaking films with english captions. Although it may not help a great deal, you will get a clearer idea of how spanish is used in conversation.

    Good luck!

Suppose you decide if you want my help or not, and I can begin helping you...or if you weren't serious, then I will let this post rest.
