Text messaging is too impersonal.

I would suggest sending him a nice friendship card to his house (snail mail) with a short written message that you missed him and you look forward to talking to him and seeing him when he returns. When he returns he'll get your card and that should warm him up. Then you can ask him out as soon as you have a chance to talk with him. Good luck.

"Dear ___ " is the customary salutation at the beginning of a letter written to anyone in English. Nothing to do with age or marital status.
