I have to compose songs for my music exam ths year, and frankly, I can write poems but not songs. Whenever i get a cute catchy verse in my head i write it down but then I don't know what to do with. Ino its prolly easier to compose the melody first, but I don't play an instrument so I need to work on the lyrics first. Does anyone have any tips?

I can list some of the lil material I have so far..

    times change
    people change
though we try to stay the same
    bring it all back

    i try and i try
    i try and i try
still time keeps passing us by
    seconds into minutes
    hours into days
how can i savour this moment, with you

if i'm im not the one you love
    go and break my heart
if im not who you want to be with
    leave me one day
if i dont make you happy
    just make me cry
but don't look away and say nothing

I don't know if this helps or not, but some of the songs I've heard are poems with one stanza repeated.

actually, try to keep the same idea throughout the song. if it makes it easier, think of your idea as a short story and go from there. good luck!

yeh thats cool and what i do when i want to make a tune up is first i listen to the rhytm of the words to get the tempo/rhythm and then i just hum out some tunes in my head or out loud (i get a few funny looks but i dont care) and just experiment.
try reading it with tunes from poular songs or nursery rhyms to get inspiration (and if all elso fails join a screamo band and just scream the words lol)

Most poems sound like songs anyway.
Anyway, usually I start humming a song with a tune like some Evanescence music, except with my own words, and some of the words are good.
I loved that song, by the way, it sounds like something I'd want to hear on the radio.

i like the song you wrote there

i think that some of the longer poems we write can easily be made into songs
