Mmmm, there's a sense that 'boys don't/shouldn't cry' going on here. And so the author feels that he's internalized a lifetime of sorrows/observations and had to supress the natural emotion to weep at the heavy expence of being the archetypal male: strong.
And yet, ironically, he realizes the innate strength of the femmine displayed through is wife who can catagorize things/pain and put them in their rightful place.
Hence, there's a sense of hopelessness when it comes to emotion and how it should be expressed and by whom. 'I want to be a girl' is walking a mile in the femminine shoes - to get inside their psyche and see who they really are when it comes to this 'supposedly' softer and more caring species.
The poet pays a price for sensitivity.
That was my gut reaction on a single read.
