I understand poetry doesn't have to be based on personal experience. However when people write stories about inseist and rape when it never happened to them...it dunno its weird. Theres some crazy poems on here and knowing that the person didnt really expirence it themselves and are able to write it...its a little disturbing. |

I guess that's just a matter of opinion though, it depends how it's written. I myself have written poems on rape a abuse but havn't experienced it, but i don't think there is anything wrong with it. I feel it's using the creative imagination to its full potential if you cover a wide variety of subjects. |

i think its fine if you want to write poems that are not based on your life experiences |

Whilst it is said that the best writing is that of first hand experience, a writer of poetry or prose is someone who can convey an emotion/experience in an empathic way so that those that read the work can relate to what is written. Otherwise writing comes across as bereft of any meaning. |

Lyla I understand what you are saying and I guess at some degree it might be disturbing to some people..But I agree with Kristen even if it never happened to you and it did to someone close to you, you feel that pain as well, maybe not physically but you do. I'm not even sure what to say because I have not been raped but had something happen to me and still write poems about girls like that and stuff and I don't even know why. I also agree with the person above me ^^^ It really does show your talent when you can just look at a situation and write about it so well...I do however know where your coming from |
