TREE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAVEMENT

Dear tree in the middle of the pavement,
I hope you live to see,
    Brighter years of fortune,
Than the ones now given to you and me.
I guess we both need some love,
    A bit of tender care,
    I guess I need a friend,
While you are satisfied with a bucket of water.

But all in all we share,
A dark moment in our lives,
Were both trying to grow up,
And were both trying to stay out of peoples way,
    We both have our roots,
That bind us to the spot,
    We both have our moments,
When we feel just like rot.

But all in all weve survived,
Through the storm and the parching sun,
Weve come this far to tell the tale,
    Little tree, do not ail.

    I noticed youre growing strong,
    And are taller than before,
I noticed your sprouting green leaves,
    Who knows, maybe even flowers.
And I can look in the mirror,
    And I can glance around,
    Ive come further, also,
Just get ready for round two.

But right now I must wish you,
    A very, very happy spring,
    Learn to grow your leaflings,
    Who knows,
Maybe this year I will learn how to sing.

*this poem was written quite a long while ago, but decided to enter it anyway.
    So, well, here it is.
I am happy to report that although the tree that I wrote about has been knocked about a great deal, it has now been firmly planted once again and looks as though it is thriving.

    Spirit of the Forest

    Through hurricanes, blizzards and tornados
    Constantly being worn down
    But still rising tall

    Watched its family get decimated
And the free land built upon
Standing alone, last of its kind
    Staying tall and proud

    Protected by law
    After decades of fear
    Now choking on pollution

    All the children crippled
    Or in paper mills
Finally, the great spirit gave out
    And came crashing down

    Weeping for its family
    Crying for woodland friends
    Sobbing for humanity's foolishness
    Tears fell for nature’s beauty
    Polluted beyond recognition

    Traveling around the world
    As cut up firewood
    To fuel factories
    As stacks of paper
    To be written upon
    As tissues
    To wipe tears

    *written about deforestation*

    Wisdom of Trees:

If stories could be told by the trees of
what would they tell us? lovers? wars? great men?
hidden deep kisses only leaves may see?
immortal marks on skin left way back when?
a young boy left love for war way back then?
great leaders tell tales of the great young dead?
This is what the aged doleful trees have said.

Can the tree be a metaphor? Like symbolic...

  • Allison

    Title: Pink Papaya

Go see the great papaya tree!
    Adorned in radiant magentas,
    Her slender trunk erected high,
    Each leaf alight with splendor…

    Relish the sweet papaya tree,
    Her honey satisfies many,
Filled the hungry in the harvest,
    Fleshy treats…divine…uncanny!

    Under the old papaya tree,
    My fingers traced the lines,
Each groove a scar- a memory,
    A glimpse into legendary times?

    Save the lone papaya tree,
    Her family litter the ground,
Their souls now warm your homes,
    Hollow- she makes no sound….

    Farewell majestic papaya tree,
The cutters march forth with pith,
    Adieu Mother Nature’s masterpiece,
You will never be a myth….

    * this is based on a wonderful experience I had in a country in W.Africa; the trees were exotic and sensational and yet it saddened me to think that something so pulchritudinous could ever be culled so cruelly. Every sense was aroused by the trees I came across but this one stood out...my only regret is that my poem doesn't do this tree the justice such beauty deserves...

Can I just say I think all the other poems are amaaazing....

    ~Green Beauty~

Out of all the hatred of the world
I open up my eyes and see
    Your green beauty shine
    Through the city streets.
    You stretch out your
    Branches as if trying
    To reach toward the heavens
    You shed your leaves
    As if they were tears.
    You blossom in the sun
    To show you are alive
    You sway in the wind
And feed off the morning light.
    Don't ever leave my sight
    You are the Willow Tree
    That makes this city bright
    Shine your green beauty
    Through this smog
    Shine your green beauty
Through all of the city rush.
    Make the people stop
    Dead in their tracks
    Show them that beauty
    Is not an act.

    ~Plant Uprooted~

    I feel disconnected,
    like a plant uprooted.
    Thought I was good,
but was not the best suited.

    Swept off my feet,
like a leaf off its tree.
    How things have changed,
    now the rest, memories.

    Why did I miss out,
    what didn't I see?
    Could things have differed,
    if it weren't me?

    I used to be great,
    the best of the field.
    What has happened to me,
    and the weapons I'd wield.

    Now, that I am disarmed,
    and left unprotected,
    this mirror emits
    an unfamiliar reflection.

    A person unknown,
    to my family and friends.
    A person alone,
    the means to an end.

    The end of all arguing,
    and upset in life,
    I've changed my ways,
without the help of a knife.

    Why is this not enough
for all of you to see,
that I want my own life,
    without the help of therapy?

    Tree of Life

Life is like a giant oak tree,
It can blossom into beauty, or be droopy.
    It can grow beautiful flowers,
Or wilt, all depending on your powers.

Slow growing, with roots dug deep in the ground,
Tying you down, so you can't freely move around.
Each tree different, special in its own way,
Yet can be alive, and then dead the next day.

Drama can strike, cutting the tree deep within,
As the blade cuts deep into the trees hard skin.
Or, the tree can live a long happy existance,
The tree will let out, a happy, flowery fregrance.

Every tree is different, and none are treated the same,
The trees are lucky if you even know their name.
In the fall they lose their leave, meaning a long cold winter,
Where their precious skin will chap and splinter.

Every tree may be different, yet some bees choose to live in,
Those trees have to deal with sting, after painful sting.
So, how is life different than a tree,
At least it cannot feel pain, like we.
