How can a person be a sexual predator in one state and a normal person in the next?

for example: Illinois: 17
across the state line Iowa 14

Can anyone (preferably an adult) explain this a little please. My mom is clueless. :(

Each state has a right to their own laws. It's just like how in Virginia, you can get your licence at 14 I think it is (either that or 15) and in Minnesota, it's 16.

There are different type of laws.. Laws that command the whole united states and ones that command only certain parts (The state laws). It's up to the state to decide those particular laws.

So if a person live in a border town in Illinois, and kick it to a 16 year old, he/she would be considered a sick pedophile, predator... but if he/she just move a mile into Iowa state, it would be OK? No jail, psychiatric treatments, no registering with the sex offenders, no rape in jail (lol), no shun by the family, no losing the job, no losing the scholarship .. etc etc ...

How can that be? That would confuse anyone.

The AOSC in Canada and Puerto Rico is 14??? OMG! Isn't that a bit too young? 14??

And here I thought it was 18 all across America.

There must be a range rule/exception that varies from state to state.
Maybe 2-3 years older than the youngest age permitted.
If the age of consent is 15 minimum and the guy is under 18.. it might be ok.. now if the guy is 85 - then there might be a problem. rofl.

omg that totally confuses me too. Ok. my *friend* JUST turned 18. I live in Ohio. Can anyone tell me how old I have to be to actually be allowed to date him?

According to that link - the AOSC in Ohio is 16
.. so if he is 18 then you will ok.
I would check with the dept of police first.

Can you imagine an 18 year old coming from The Phillipines on vacation to California (aosc 18) with his 13 year old girlfriend?

Ya, if you are 17 and she is 19. and you are in the Philippines where the age of sexual consent is 12.. umm.. yeah, I would say that you are definitely in the safe zone to do anything you want! lol.

Can you ask anyone there what is the AOSC? I'm really betting that website is wrong. It can't possibly be 12. That is a child!

I checked with my PuertoReefer.. Er.. Puerto Rican Friends and ... the age of sexual consent "is" 14! Yikes! I asked several Puerto Ricans, and they all say the same thing.

Me: "*cough* You ARE aware that the age of consent is different here .. um 17. right?"
Them: "Of course we do stupid!"
