I just typed out my Industrial Revolution report for my world history class. I was wondering if anyone was willing to read it and comment on it. Maybe tell me what I did wrong or what I did right.
During the Industrial Revolution, things were pretty tough. Living conditions were hard and people were constantly working to get a little bit of change. People had to search for things to do for fun. They were also starting to get into fashion.
Housing during the Industrial Revolution had its ups and downs, depending on which social class you were in. Homes of the poor were usually pretty small and lied on small, narrow streets. The houses were usually back to back, with no space in between them. If you lived poorly during this time, you probably lived with several other families. You would have had to share toilet facilities, which most likely consisted of a bucket. They called their toilet some pretty interesting names, such as “outhouse,†“chamber potâ€, “thunder potâ€, and “thunder mugâ€. They usually tucked their toilet away under the bed until it was needed. The homes were really open to dampness, which causes things to mold and ruin. For the people that had it worse than those people probably stayed in cellars. Staying here had all of the disadvantages of the other people, plus a little more. Sewage was usually tossed outside by the upstairs neighbors. Then, it usually seeped in through the walls. When it rained really hard, the much polluted rivers would overflow and flood out the basement dwellers. For the wealthy, they didn’t have to worry about any of this. These people usually lived in huge mansions that stretched for miles. They had better plumbing than the poor and didn’t have to worry about sewage leaking through the walls. The wealthy didn’t have to live with several other families, either. They didn’t need to. The wealthy could support themselves.
There wasn’t much that people could do for fun during the Industrial Revolution. A lot of people were working in factories for long hours, which left them with no time for leisure. People were usually way too busy working to have time to worry about enjoying themselves. Most people worked in factories for 14 or 15 hours a day, which left little time for eating and sleeping.
Whenever there was time for fun and games, people played football, archery, and cricket. The wealthy played golf and raced horses. Whenever people played football, they usually played with their heads. Football back then was the same thing as soccer. Anyone could play, both boys and girls. Cricket is pretty much the same thing as baseball, only the rules are a tab bit different. Libraries were also brought into the picture in 1847.
Fashion was a big thing around this time. Women always wore dresses, everywhere they went. When they were playing sports, at home, or working in the factory, they had on a dress. Women usually did not wash their dress for months at a time. At the bottom of their dress was a dust ruffle. It would catch a lot of the dirt and then the dust ruffle could be removed. After they removed it, they could wash it a little more often. Under their dress, they wore a thick slip or underskirt to make the dress look fuller and fluffy. If a woman is widowed, she has to wear her mourning dress for six months. When doing this, it showed respect to her husband, lets people know about what had happened so people can give her sympathy and help her with what needs done. If another close relative dies, the dress is only worn for 3 months. Men usually just had on under drawers, a shirt, neckwear, collars, cuffs, a waistcoat of vest, trousers, and a hat. Men were usually pretty stylish with their clothes, if they were wealthy. Some wore patterns on a lot of their clothing. The waistcoats that the men wore for day wear ended above the natural waist and appeared singe or double-vested. The waistcoats that the men for evening wear were longer and single-breasted. The men’s hair was usually worn full and waved over to the side. In front of the ears and the neck was trimmed. Beards and clean-shaven looks were both very popular. The men that had mustaches usually had the ends waxed and curled. All the clothes that the people wore during this time were made of cotton and were weaved by hand and garments were stitched by hand. Only the very wealthy could get the latest styles from Paris, London, and other big capitals. The ordinary person had no way of getting enough money to have those types of clothes. Since all clothing was expensive, the styles of dresses did not change from year to year. Usually, clothing was passes down from one generation to another.
Smocks were also very popular during the Industrial Revolution. Smocking was known as an art during this time. Smocking is where you decorate a small area of clothing and make a honeycomb pattern. Smocking was done on almost all clothing during this time.
There were a few new consumer goods during the Industrial Revolution. One was sporting equipment. Since sports were very popular during this time, the equipment needed to be made so they could play. Cotton clothing was also another good, along with clothing, ammunition, furniture, and rubber tires for driving. There were many factory goods available. The three main products were coal, iron projects, and machinery equipment.
The Industrial Revolution has helped our country become who we are today. We have the same the things as they did back then, only so much more. Everything has improved since then and, hopefully, continues to do so.
Please and Thank You.
