how people can't have a healthy debate about things, such as racism, for fear of offending someone. i can appreciate that everyone has different levels of acceptance when it comes to racism, but, unless specific comments are made, i don't understand how people can be so sensitive about it.

surely by rendering a subject 'taboo' you're increasing the chance of someone being offended?

    just a thoughttt.

i totally agree, but they say this is a free country and we should have freedom of speech but i totally disagree with that comment because its aload of crap, you tell a joke and some one finds it racist and there you are your in bloody court for it.

it also annoys me how they can call each other certain words i wont mention but other people cant because they are the wrong colour or origin or religion now what all thats about i dont know!

and yes this comment will probably insult some one somewhere roll on court i guess lol!

If being a healthy debate it shouldn't offend people anyway.. Unfortunately most people can not state their opinions respectfully and that is where it causes offense.

I don't know whether people heard about an MP in England who asked a muslim woman if she wouldn't mind taking off her headwear whilst she interviewed him, as it made her seem more approachable. [stress on the word asked.] it's a generalised fact, i'd say, that most people find masked faces quite imposing and there was absolute outrage because of his request. it's completely unnecessary. he didn't demand and he was happy for her to decline, yet people feel the need to complain about civil rights and racism.

in some cases, it feels like people are using the "oppressed race" excuse in order to abuse certain privileges; England wanting to become a Multi-Cultural society. people often end up stereotyping themselves and adding to the vicious circle.

    so yeah.

So tell me Ironic Allure, if we were to debate about Racism, which is basically arguing for and against it. Would you side with the bigots, and justify their own reasoning.

Or would you say that in their own time period it was an acceptable norm, therefore they cannot change what their own society instilled in them.

I think racism is a taboo, in that we base our own judgements of people in the colour of their skin.

We can debate on things that are acceptable, but to debate on something that you know will offend and instill hatred in many. It would be rather trivial.

    i think you're a little confused.

it'd be highly idiotic of me to argue for and against something that's entirely subjective and, frankly, irrational of me to assume there's a possibility the world would ever be completey rid of racism.

what i'm wondering is why people seem to derive insults from something so neutral? people seem to think that stating something factual about a cultural difference means they're degrading or condemning it and, personally, i think it's unjustified and unnecessary.
