I think alot of modern mythical creatures are rip offs of old ones. You can adapt them but essentially they are the same. Gollum is quite unique but he is not a new to literature, only film.

Perhaps some of garth Nix's creations in The Old Kingdom Trilogy could be seen to be unique.

that would be great as the creatures are really cool.

Gollum was sheer originality and was portrayed in an excellent way. Other creatures, namely hobbits, I do think exist. I don't know where, but I do know somewhere.

    Perhaps the Shire? :]

    How bout a Liger.

Ligers aren't mythical (assuming you're talking about the LionXTigers?) they've actually bred them. Umm what about the Harpie or the three headed thing that Hercules killed? They're pretty unique.

^ the three-headed dog was cerebrus, mentioned above. hmm, what else can i think of... Scylla, in the Odyssey - body of a dog, with serphent heads? Chimaera - goat body, snake tail, lion head. cyclops... mm. (crunkz took all of my good ones : ) ) Kelpies - the Irish water horse demons that seduce unsuspecting travelers into the water, where they drown them...

for more human-like mythological beings, I don't know. Fairies, tricksters, witches.... meh.

Well in Scotland we have our fair share of local mythical creatures.

Things like Selkies, who are female water spirits who take on the form of beautiful ladies and get guys needing a cold dip..which usually always turns out to be their last...unless they are pure of heart...which is almost never....thought lucky for my last girlfriend was one...and she must have lost her purity sensor...cause she let me live...

If you want to find mythical creatures, search country by country...POland, Spain, germany...they all have em by the bucketload.

I have to agree about mythical creatures. I am so into that stuff, and well, I like the fairies and the magic bearing ones.

If you dont know, he is a charecter from the movie Pan's Labyrinth, wich I would recomend every one to watch,
It was awsome, it totally rocked
it was a weird combination of horror and fantasy
    rated R for violence!

I think Tracy hickman and Margaret Weis did a great job on creating non-existent character's. The full description of the draconians in War of the Lance was fasicanting... and extreamly creative..
