Sport utility prayer (villanelle)

by libby   Mar 8, 2006

We dump more gasoline into our SUVs
64 ounce cups fly through the window
Which god, exactly, are we trying to appease?

Four wheel drive will make our lives more free
Bring us to a destination currently unknown
If we dump more gasoline into our SUVs

Ironic, we drive through forests of trees
We don't notice they're made of gutted bones
Which god, exactly, are we trying to appease?

So many things we think we might need
End up unused, discarded, thrown
So let's dump more gasoline into our SUVs

Skeletons of a world grab us, choke us, we scream
Let's close our eyes, make our evil parts go
Which god, exactly, are we trying to appease?

These shiny black creatures with which the world teems
Might carry you off when you sit alone
Quick, dump more gas into your SUV!
Which god, exactly, are you trying to appease?

Yeah, so I think I kind of suck at villanelles. But hey, I tried.
