Charlie

I found a caterpillar
He really is just great
All small and green and wriggly
Too good for some birds plate

Don't worry little fella
I'll keep you safe fro harm
Your hundred feet do tickle me
As you crawl along my arm

I will call you Charlie.
That's a good name don't you think?
I'll keep you safe inside a jar
Above the kitchen sink

Fresh leaves I'll bring you every day
So you'll grow big and strong
But Charlie don't be greedy
Or you will grow too long

I really love you Charlie
You are the greatest pet
Even though you cannot speak
You think a lot I bet.

And so we fill our days with fun
Oh Charlie, you're sublime
I'm really glad I found you
That you are truly mine

Alas, alack, where have you gone?
Why aren't you in your jar?
Charlie! Charlie! where are you?
Please don't have gone far

Mum laughs and says you are still there
You're hiding can't I see?
No Mum, I don't see Charlie
Please point him out to me

Then one day a huge surprise
As I look inside your jar
There is a lovely butterfly
Did it come here from afar?

Mum says that this is Charlie
Wow. That's really neat
I didn't know that you'd become
A butterfly so sweet.

And so I must release you
Then you can fly up to the sky.
As I watch you leave your little jar
I must try not to cry
