Rainbows and Unicorns

by JLT   Nov 1, 2006

We could sit and talk about rainbows and unicorns.
Think happy thoughts and cause no harm.
We could forget to remember that it even happened.
Make it another one of our silly habits.
We could forget we ever loved each other.
Forgive all of our past mistakes.
We could make it a point to ignore our memories.
Block out all the unwanted heartache.
We could walk around in numbness.
We could walk away with no harm done.
We could forget to remember it even happened.
Make it known that neither of us won.
We could skip the pain and suffering.
The awkwardness that no one needs.
We should do something... Anything.
Anything except for this...
Anything except for wishing
And hating
And missing.
Anything but weeping,
And hurting
And thinking...
We could think happy thoughts that cause no harm.
Forget about our feelings.
Avoid coming undone.
We could unremember the days we stood arm to arm.
We could just sit here and talk about unicorns...

The first line and the title of this piece caught my attention and made me curious as to how you would make this a love poem. I really like the way you did though. The only downside to this piece is the repetition in the middle and end, that just took the charm of the piece away. However the final line did bring some of that back though.

Beautiful. I like the structure and depth of your poetry. You truly have a talent and it seems as though through your poem you can understand how fairytales can heal reality. Great job!
