On My Own

by Emily Strickland   Aug 29, 2007

I know I'm still young,
and I've got lots of time to grow.
So many things left to experience,
and still a lot that I don't know.
There are lots of potholes on the road ahead,
and it's sure to be a bumpy ride.
But I know I must stay true to myself,
and take the up's and down's with pride.
I hear your concerns and doubts,
I wasn't really the most responsible child.
Too interested in boys and being lazy,
always trying to live crazy and wild.
But I've stepped up to the plate,
It's time to be an adult.
I've accepted the challenge of life,
and learned to deal with my fault.
I'm working hard everyday
to prove to myself and to you.
That this wonderful girl you've raised,
can make it on her own too.
You filled me with enough wisdom,
you've given me all your love,
encouraged me to be the best,
and to always rise above.
Well now that I've left the nest as they say,
it's time to let me go.
Watch my flower blossom
as your little girl begins to grow.
I know it wont be easy
but I hope you'll be by my side through it all.
To accept me for the person I am,
and help pick me up when I get weak and fall.
I promise to make you proud,
finish college and get a great career.
Call you every day and night,
visit every holiday throughout the year.
Just know that I love you
and appreciate all that you've given me.
I know deep down you'll soon realize,
what a mature adult I turned out to be.
