To Have, To Hold

by RB   Sep 14, 2008

I was always that girl not worth loving till the end,
You were always that boy I kept trying to defend,
So I told you to tell me all the things you'd been told,
"We're just two different people wanting something to hold."

I tried to shield you from the things that they said,
So I tucked you under covers as you lay in my bed,
You were better than the words left floating in the air,
I defended your honor, though you never seemed to care.

Never offered to catch me, though you knew I would fall,
And the tears that I cried never mattered at all,
I was something more than nothing, but never enough,
You told me the opposite, left me calling your bluff.

We were two different people wanting something to hold,
And I was better than nothing, that's what I've been told,
But I was only that girl not worth loving till the end,
And you were only that boy I kept trying to defend.
