Longing, Listening

by Viola   Sep 27, 2008

The piano lies untouched today
Unadorned - for you
Its sounds hushed
And I
I can imagine you there
Whole
Silenced
Pouring yourself out
Into that melodic sound
The only time you'd ever speak
Without barriers
Was when you thought no one was listening

But sound dies
Lingers in the air
Like cigarette smoke for a while
And then it's gone
Your music lives
In your heart
All that pain translated
Into little notes on a page
One after the other

When you play I can never stop watching your fingers
Moving across the keys
Your body swaying back and forth
Hitting the pedals
The way your eyes look, your face
I can never get it out of my head
It's the only time I'll ever understand you
It's the only time you're ever alive
