I always knew...

by Ahmed Ali   Mar 19, 2009

I always knew
that i could paint stars in the sky.
with a simple wave of my hand,
but most people would think it's a lie.

i always knew
that some truths were best unsaid.
because they hurt too much,
and an ocean of tears need not be shed.

i always knew
that i could fly like a bird.
be wingless in flight,
through the theater of the absurd.

i always knew
that you were looking in my direction.
stealing away some glimpses,
but always hiding away your affection.

i always knew
that i could voice myself without a single word.
make you listen with my touch,
let my feelings be heard.

i always knew
that you would eventually break my heart.
tear it to pieces,
and toss it wildly apart.

i always knew
that you were wrong for me.
but i held your hand anyway,
give things a chance, take it as far as we can see.

i always knew
that was a mistake.
but i pursued it anyway,
even if I knew that my heart would ache.

i always knew
that some things were too good to be true.
some things are just not meant to be,
but I had already bitten off more than i can chew.

i always knew
that i would find myself lost.
My road being stoic
how was it that our paths had ever crossed?

i always knew
but i never cared.
i always knew
but i was never scared.

i always knew
but i never knew; that i needed to be; THAT prepared.
