Mother Nature (Earth Day Poem)

by Rachel RTVW   Apr 23, 2009

Taken for granted our mother, polluted and robbed of her treasures
Yet she continues to allow us to enjoy her many temperaments

In the Spring, she is energized and commands the sun to shine
Captivating all displaying her majestic talent
Brooks babble inviting the woodland animals back to play
Dandelions roam the meadow, the breeze causes them to sway

She displays to us the power of wind and water with hurricanes
Compassion is delivered to all of earth by cool, refreshing rains
You hear thunder from miles away and view lightening shows
Then realizing she may have been harsh, paints us a rainbow

In the summer mother often calms the waves so we may swim
Allowing us to see many miracles on our nature walks
Green Ivy carpets the floor and caterpillars transform to butterflies
She senses when forests need a drink, for mother nature is wise

Worker bees collect pollen and in the hive they make honey
Dragonflies pass atop lillypads teasing the many hungry frogs
At times her temperature is unforgiving, the ground burns bare feet
Mother provides many shade trees so we can rest out of the heat

In the Autumn she leaves us in awe with the changing of the leaves
Shades of red, yellow and orange make a canvas of the landscape
She delivers pumpkins, squash, corn and apples for our feast
Then brushes the sky with brilliant hues as the horizon sinks east

The moon draws near and shines brightly to light the travelers path
Nights clear so we may stare in wonder at the twinkling stars
The wind a little stronger now, crisper is the air
Leaves crunch under foot, the branches now are bare

In the Winter her breath becomes frigid, she showers us with snow
Birds migrate south and the great black bears go into hibernation
Icy blanket covers all, such a shimmering sight
Cold seems to linger so long, chilling us with all her might

When we ask why everything changes, mother says for many reasons
Nothing can ever stay the same, hence the change of seasons
