How was I to know

by Anthony Pavese   Jul 21, 2009

Though far apart our love was strong.
How was I to know, I could be so wrong.

She said she would love me till the day she died
How was I to know, to my face she had lied.

With all her heart she accepted my ring.
How was I to know, it didn't mean a thing.

She swore to be with me for the rest of her life.
How was I to know, she would not be my wife.

She was happy I was building us a home.
How was I to know, I would live in it alone.

We used to laugh and have so much fun.
How was I to know, she would go on the run.

She moved south where she wanted to be.
How was I to know, it would be without me.

For weeks she would not write and I wondered why.
How was I to know, she was seeing another guy.

She was so clever at lying and such.
How was I to know, I loved her too much.

She will not admit that she strayed off course.
How was I to know, she would show no remorse.

I am too old now to start a new life.
How was I to know, I would be with no wife.

I go through life now with emptiness and sorrow.
How was I to know, for us, there would be no tomorrow.
