Dust

by Tori Hicks   Mar 6, 2010

O how your eyes shine in the dim moonlight
To awaken dreams within me
That existed only in my childhood slumber.
Stories of years past begrudgingly escape me
And I forget it all
As you embrace my shaking body.
Down the pathway a tree has fallen
At the whim of a thundering storm
Much like the one in my heart.
The briefest of touches from your hands
Send a spark through my heart now
To force my body into action.
Shall I stay?
To do so would be a crime.
Shall I leave?
To do so would only deepen the wound.
Without any choice on the matter
I admit to myself this love
Which lights my heart on fire.
Only your hand leading me through the darkness
Helps me through the debris lying across the path
To get safely to the bridge overlooking the glistening, dark water.
But I realize this is not forever.
Soon enough, you and I will leave the golden days of youth behind
To become a faded memory in the minds of the next generation.
I fear for the day I lose you and we both become dust
But from dust comes beauty
And from beauty comes love.
