The Plains In Flames (Sestina)

by Antigone Jackson   Apr 23, 2010

The plains are on fire tonight
We lit the grass with our arsenic
Our wind spread the flames,
like an oceans ripple effect.
We stood above the chaos
to watch, hand in hand.

We are conjoining puzzle pieces, hand in hand,
a picture perfect smile, tonight.
Despite the roaring chaos
below, all caused by the lethal arsenic.
Who could have known this cause and effect,
the mischievous flames?

Look how graceful they dance, these flames,
like a simple wave of a hand.
Two hearts racing like locomotives, is the effect.
A blanket of thick smoke and ashes, tonight.
A kiss, echoing through our bones like arsenic,
the most beautiful chaos.

The plains aren't accustom to this kind of chaos,
churning and yearning, like hungry flames.
We breathe in the mayhem, as deadly as arsenic.
I'm distracted by the feel of your hand
in mine, stealing all of my attention, tonight
savoring your calming effect.

Does my touch have the same effect
on you? Or do I fill your veins with chaos,
I'll fill them with the same fire, tonight.
The same delicate flames
that destroy the plains, with just the touch of my hand,
as if your blood was sweet arsenic.

All we feel is our arsenic,
it's taking its effect.
The plains' flames
are no match for our chaos.
We still stand here, hand in hand,
as the fire below us dies down, tonight.

My whole world is in your hand, shielding me from this chaos,
We'll clean the lands of the torturous arsenic, and love will be the effect
These flames, will always be in our hearts, forever and tonight.
