I have just been catching up reading a lot of your poems. The last few weeks I've missed a heap, I assume it's because you wrote a pretty large amount for Colms contest and I was unable to keep up. Out of all the beautiful pieces this really caught my attention, I'm fond of nature poems and your ability to be so in touch with nature it is what I've always appreciated in your writing.

This poem to me was very surreal; I depicted it as more of a thought or dream rather than a memory. I guess looking at surrealist artwork the imagery created here was something I expect to see in an artwork by Dali or Magritte. I imagined seeing a sparrow's eye and then inside it a whole new word, one that portrays endless fields of wheat, harmony and peace.

I also took the pools of murky pond as a metaphor for a tear coming from the sparrow and perhaps the world you created was actually a reflection in the tear, or even just a reflection in the sparrow's iris. This poem really allows for the readers imagination to run wild, you take us on a journey but don't direct us, you let us create our own image and that's what is so beautiful about this poem.

When I read the last line of course I started to think maybe it was a memory for you and again that's the beauty of interpretation, it really is up to the audience. Linking the idea of a time of innocence back to the possibility of a tear in the sparrow's eye made me think that you were reminiscing on your childhood and are missing those times you once had.

This was an elegantly written short poem, I loved it. Sorry for the rambling, I'm a little rusty with interpretation lately and once I get started with a comment I generally write all my thoughts down and the comments end up like ... well like this!
