Patience

by Allen Harris   Apr 11, 2013

I love you
But sometimes love is not enough
When geography clutches onto intertwined fingers
pulling them apart like tectonic plates
with the tears of earthquakes that do little better than love
to erode mountains to meadows
so I'll make maps of the music of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Tirrel
And the melodies to block Tic Toc
See sometimes its like time
Takes a switchblade to my Achilles tendon
Turning a strong stride to a hobble
haunting me with eternity
As it pulls my face to the ground with gravity
Graying my hair and using the weight of wrinkles
On my eye lids so I'd too nearsighted to see you seating next to me
I guess it wouldn't matter if "WE" was carved into every stone
As the destiney god dealt
If the devil finds loop holes with the fates
Three sisters, jilted lovers sharing the jealous eye
And cutting our life lines just short enough
That the arthritis our half hearts pump threw varicose veins
Will not allow the brittle fingers of Hope to still tie them together i love you
I say it easily as if translating
The goo goo's ga ga's of infancy
And it flows threw me
Manifesting as the morse code of my heart beats
That taught me how to love you with metaphors and not just like you with similes
So I'll wait more still than stone
More patient than time
And with twice the intent and intensity of divine intervention
Because sometimes love ain't enough
You gotta be patient too.
