A wonderful piece of poetry about the blissful ignorance with which we can sometimes view life and love and the often inevitable falling from grace as it were. An understanding that it isn't always sunshine and roses and that, sometimes, it seems better to keep ourselves grounded, as you say, simply to protect our hearts.
I do appreciate what you've done here in terms of the acknowledgment of selling your soul to achieve this end. That crowns the sadness of the piece, for me at least.
