I know the story behind this and it may just be something she needs to do to come back an even stronger person than before and hopefully a damn site more happy. I know that doesn't help you, but take comfort in the fact that she's facing life head on which, ultimately, might be good for her.

Saying goodbye to siblings (or someone you love in general) is one of the hardest things to do...ever. In any situation.
