Skinwalker

by words2myself   Oct 28, 2017

In a land barren and wasteful
I could hear the coyote howl
there was no full moon
yet on the tree I saw an owl

Was this a sign or an omen
farther into the night I went
It was cold and I shivered
not from the cold but from what I seen

In the blackness I could just about make out
a faint shadow on the horizon
I stopped and let out a shout
whatever I saw it run off fast

Things of the night I do not fear
a sound from behind that was near
I look to see what I can see
The only thing there is a tree

As I turn round again there it stood
not human nor animal as it made a growl
before I had time to adjust my eyes it let out a howl
then dropped to all fours and took off into the night
it seen my face so maybe it had got a good fright

Was this thing following or hunting me?
What I had just seen was no dream
just then there was an almighty scream
yet at the same time it was inhuman

Was something in distress
or was I the one in danger
if I was I'd already be dead
this thing I did not dread

Is anyone going to believe what I saw
or will they say it was all in my head
at night I can still hear the coyote howl
out in the darkness and on the prowl
