So Long Ago

by David Parenti   Apr 5, 2026

It was so long ago, and yet
I remember very clearly
That certain girl with a certian smile
And how I loved her dearly

We were young in high school
It's puppy love they's say
But I'd just smile, they couldn't know
It would always be that way

The times we shared, the fun we had
Would last forever I knew
In a few short years, our promises made
On the day we'd say I do

Young love it seems is often naieve
With hearts carelessly tossed
Onto the restless sea of hopes and dreams
Where many time they're lost

And so it was, I came to find
In late August of '63
When she said she had to spread her wings
Then she flew away from me

My heart stood still, my thoughts confused
As my young world came crashing down
All my plans turned to dust
And scattered on the ground

But life goes on the wise men say
And surely it has for me
'Cause there's no such thing as what might have been
I've come to learn, you see

A new love found, the years flew past
With only bittersweet thoughts of then
'Till I hearad she'd left for heaven's door
And I felt that loss all over again

So now, as I say a last goodby
While wiping away my tears
For that certain girl, with a certain smile
Loving memories of yesteryears
