Without second thought

A lingering puppy
Follows my feet
Pouncing my foot
So nose and toes meet

He looks at me
With innocent eyes
His world is without
hurt, anger, and lies

This puppy, so fragile,
Hasn't the slightest clue
That war is among us
Or the evils people can do

Perhaps that's the reason
He has a carefree life
Napping and playing,
He knows nothing of strife

And that's what preserves
His pure intention
He knows he doesn't need
violence to gain attention

So maybe that's why
We love dogs so much
They're therapeutic
Through the simplest touch

This puppy, so cute,
so ignorant and lost,
Will strive for our love,
At the highest cost.

And we're attracted
To their yearning to please
Because in our relationships,
That trait is hard to see.

Puppies will give
The things people will not
They love without judgment
Without second thought
