I Cannot

by Daniel Mulvany   May 24, 2005

Let me not be the reason that the sea pours from your eyes,
Behind closed doors where shows the broken heart behind your faced disguise.
I never meant for you to love me as you say you do,
Nor can I share in this love, 'tis simply, I cannot love you.
It's not your skin, your beautiful, desirable your face.
It's not your body, tempting is each nightly sweet embrace.
It's not your speech, soft-spoken words fall heavy on my heart.
It's not the distance, love endures when conjoined hearts must part.
But darling, there's a reason, though it's hard for me to say,
A reason that I cannot love you though you love me anyway.
It's that my heart does not lay here with me, indeed it's in my chest,
But 'tis promised to another, 'twill forever with her rest.
