Poem to run by

by claire   Oct 4, 2003

Jogging around, my music's turned loud
I'll have a good race, to myself I vowed
Trying not to let thoughts creep into my head
About my aching legs, or how late I went to bed

I no longer care who is there to cheer
Though my stomach still flutters I've lost my fear
We line up to start and do a few strides
We yell out our cheer, teammates at our sides

I'm on my toes, poised for the start
The gun goes off, the line breaks apart
I sprint to keep up, with the head of the pack
Those who are wary, are left in the back

I'm running with tess and we're not far behind
From our number one girl, who's head of the line
I pump my legs hard as we plow up a hill
And though it's a blur, my worlds quite still

The pain comes on soon, but I'm ready to face
It's my turn to show who owns the race
Tess soon pulls away but not by a lot
I hang on to the front, it's all that I've got

Not minutes have passed when I hear breathing behind
It seems three girls have had me on their own mind
They fly by my side but I know its not right
I'm not giving up easy, I'll put up a fight

We tear down the road and back unto the course
I'm staying with Ingrid, I feel no remorse
I soon sprint ahead, cuz she's looking behind
Her look is apparent, her intentions not kind

I hear her cheer as I run smoothly by
The last leg of the race, I'm going to fly
There's a girl up ahead, not out of my sight
My feet have grown wings, my legs taken flight

Peoples screams they surround, and urge me to go
The girl ahead is starting to slow
Or is it that I'm starting to stride
Whatever it is, I move to her side

The pain in my legs is dissolving to bits
The last one hundred comes down to this
She's right on my tail but my step will not slip
I'm gaining ground and cracking the whip

I burst through the finish a smile on my face
I've just got a PR, I conquered this race
I still love my friend who came in ahead
I have love for my team, the white and the red
