Ashes

Like ashes i am
empty,
colorless,
remainders of the past
swirling upward
in a smoky, spiraling, stream
but there is no smoke
for there is no flame
my fire was extinguished long ago
oh and what a fire it was!
red hot flames,
dancing furiously,
hypnotizing,
and beautiful.
until they were suffocated
i gave you my fire
and you destroyed it.
i know you have tried
to rekindle it
but it will never burn the same.

i gather my ashes,
remembering the recklessness
in those old flames
that recklessness that now terrify me
i hold these ashes close to my heart
and walk on numbly
through the silence
