Final Moments

by william payne   Aug 19, 2005

Mortars blowing off
Bullets whizzing by
But there was only one thing
Going through the Marine's mind

Not the pain in his chest
From where the shrapnel had hit
Or the pain from the bullets
Lodged in his hip

But of his wife at home
Carrying a child he'll never hold

As he lay on the ground
Looking up at the sky
He dreamed of holding her
One last time

Dancing with her
Around the room
And lying in the grass
Under the stars and the moon

In his final minutes
She was the only thing on his mind
Not the hole in his chest
Or the pain in his side

As the minutes flew by
For him time stood still
As he thought of her pain
when she would find out her husband was killed

His eyes filled with tears when he realized
His promise he could not keep
Then he took his last breath
And like that, he was watching her sleep

He lied on the bed
And whispered in her ear
Even though i am gone
My love, i will always be here
