A Suburban Storyline

by Jesse   Oct 16, 2005

On the most secluded hilltop
Where I watch the morning bird peck at restless locals
I count headlights and road blocks that add to the congested freeway
Where 4 out of 6
Or 7
Or 10
Americans believe that driving into the October horizon will alleviate their lives

I stare out into the same horizon and hope for a similar effect
But the neon-like colors just hurt my eyes

The break of day is not so great when your best friend is snoring beside you
And your all-digital color phone is missing her text messages
With the colon symbol and end-parenthesis that creatively make a smiley face

I type out a message to her at 6:35 in the A.M.
And close my eyes for what I think is two minutes
But two minutes turn into ten minutes
And I open my eyes to wonder why she has not replied

It was not that it was 6:35 and she was resting
While the sun was struggling behind mountaintops
I had closed my eyes in fear before ever pressing the â??SENDâ?? button
