One Night Stand

You are a large part furnished flat
In central London near St Pauls
In shades of cream and taupe
Decorated in expensive art
You don't understand.

You are an expensive designer suit
Tailored to fit perfectly
In with the sea of other designer suits
Trading off each other to
Stand out and be counted.

You are the 14 hour working day
And the six figure pay cheque
That there's never time to spend
Sitting back with a six pack that grows
Fat with other people's money

You are a gourmet dinner for one
In an empty exclusive restaurant.
One more shot after closing time
With some friends you just made
And invite to party in your penthouse

You are the unknown host
At the night's last main attraction
The passionless thrust
Of this City's one night stand
That's already yesterday's news.

I am the morning after pick me up
When they've all retired home
Leaving you to contemplate
That even Peter Pan
Has a shelf life.
