Australian Christmas

by Eibutsina   Dec 25, 2005

Itâ??s Christmas day
Itâ??s in the air
I can hear the children playing over the back fence
Their laughter floats with the wind
Carrying their innocence and essence of fun with the breeze
Happiness is radiating through the smiles
And joy shared amongst kin
Christmas wrapping paper scatters the streets
Escaping from sun baked lounge rooms
And traveling the wind with the childrenâ??s laughter
It makes me smile
It makes me proud
And itâ??s with that pride
That today I enjoy an Australian Christmas.
With roast lamb and barbequed seafood
Enjoyed over an outdoor setting in the sun
Fresh prawns and oysters plentiful
Fruit and fresh food abundant
The anticipation of gift giving, the looks on my childrenâ??s faces
To see the surprise lying under the paper
To see their well behaved efforts this annum
Have not gone unnoticed
To know that I shopped like mad yesterday
Trod along the battle zone of the night before Christmas shopping
The war like atmosphere of stress filled struggle
Almost riot-alike attempt of last minute shopping
But the look on their faces was worth it
Worth every strenuous minute of shopping
Grandparentâ??s hearts warmed with this rare time
Watching their face
Watching my childrenâ??s faces
Makes my heart smile in a way it never has before
A Pure contentment, a selfless contentment.

Mother was spoilt rotten this year
By far her presents even out weighed those of the kids
She deserved it and every emotion that went into it
I watched my father shed tears of joy
As she wept opening the most heartfelt gift imaginable
In turn all the tears turned to those of my own
But tears of happiness nothing more
To be reminded again of what Christmas really is
What a real Australian Christmas is.
The kitchen is full and free loaders present
Letâ??s all face it
He who has been to an Australian Christmas
Knows of the free loaders ï??
But the conversation is rapid and loud
The grog is golden and flowing
Glasses clashing pots are a smashing
And the smell of the year long awaited meal
Lingers the warmest breeze
The call comes out, loud and fast
â??Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunchâ??
And its time for all to sit down and eat

Come one and come all
The meal is ready
The sun is still shining outside
And the food as always is a plenty
Grab your plates
Help yourself
And enjoy as much as you like
Of this unique traditional meal
Filled with Australian-tradition delight
Plates are clattering
While crumbs and remnants fill the dishes
Of what was once a Christmas lunch
Cooked with love and kind wishes
Bellies are full and up to the brim
Dessert is popped in the luke warm oven
Couch seats are claimed
As top buttons of jeans are unbuttoned
And room is made for the sweet finale
The atmosphere is amazing
Breeding and thriving on this day
So many thoughtful gestures
And kin thoughts to share and say
Memories of my very fondest ever
Australian Christmas Day.
