A soldier\'s bride...

by Bethan   Mar 25, 2006

A day like no other had begun,
The day her heart was finally won,
For who could resist a soldier's charm,
One who intended her no harm,

He never used games or strategies,
And never gave her guarantees
He simply told her how he felt.
And slowly her heart began to melt,

For she had always said never again,
Never would she go through pain,
To please another she idolised,
While all they did was tell her lies,

She had been hurt in the past,
By a love she thought would last,
It was her left with a broken heart
When without warning he did depart,

So her heart she turned to stone,
And vowed to always be alone,
Let no one in and you can't be hurt,
Although her plan could never work,

As she'd already caught another's eye,
A fellow brave enough to try,
And free her heart from its binding cage,
And battle through her mask of rage,

Although she wouldn't let him near,
Still the soldier did persevere,
He made progress albeit slow,
Until her feelings too did show,

And this day unlike all the rest,
Will put commitment to the test,
For she has agreed to be his wife,
And he to be there all her life,

It was hard for her to trust another,
And now she has a brand new lover,
But what about when he goes to war?
She'll be alone, again, once more,

Just like the man she loved before,
Her soldier too walking out the door,
And she left worried for her lover's life,
Oh, how love can cause such strife,

What can she do? She already loves him
She feels stupid now for letting him in,
She is going to be hurt, she knows already,
Her plans for the future now unsteady,

Before she agrees to marry the soldier,
He must agree that the army is over,
She feels her vows cannot be fulfilled,
Towards a man destined to be killed,

She wants them to grow old together,
And sit and moan about the weather,
So for her he forfeits his army status,
To bring an end to her hiatus,

And now she has nothing else to fear,
The time for vows is finally here,
She takes a breath to say I do,
And suddenly she's turning blue,

Due to all her worry and stress,
She suffered a heart attack no less,
On her wedding day before the priest,
The soldier's bride became deceased.
