Hearts That Can't Cry

by The Spirit of Ash   May 5, 2006

"My little boys' lives were taken"
Said the speaker today at school
"By a drunk driver one night,
He thought drinking was cool."

Everywhere all around me
People were crying, tears slipping
Even a boy and girl older than me
They too...with hands gripping

Tears would rush to me too
But they just refused to spill
I felt hard hearted and cold
I felt emotionally ill

On the row in front of me
Is my best friend giving hugs
She too isn't crying, and I know why
As the speaker tells us about drugs

We watched a memory held video
And even the boys' last minute
I'm still not crying, people look at me
All I can do is sigh and say, "what?"

I knew what they were thinking
Oh if only they knew what was true
It was the same for my best friend
If only they knew what we've been through

When the presentation ended
We looked at each other sadly
We were both thinking the same thing
That we've already been hurt badly

We've cried out all of our tears
Don't even think we have anymore
But we weren't always like this
We cried at everything before

But even though we are drained
We won't let it bring us down
As best friends, we get through anything
We have our ways of erasing a frown

We will always be there for each other
Through the storms, and the showers
We know there is nothing in the world
Stronger than a friendship like ours

*I have never felt so cold hearted in my life. That day was probably the saddest day for anyone else, but regretfully it wasn't for my best friend or me. All of the other high school grades were crying their eyes out, even those 'tough guys' and even some of the teachers. A family had lost 3 of their 6 family members in one night, and it hurts me that I don't cry at something like that. My best friend and me are lucky to have eachother, we've been through a lot together. Drug dealers, abusive parents, lost friendships, heartbreaks, lies, depression, yet we get through :)
