Gone to Gallipoli ( i will be home soon)

by ...   May 15, 2006

Ok, i wrote this on ANZAC day, a pretty pathetic tribute to the ANZACs, but i tried, hope its good..

His hopeful eyes were alight
They shone with youthful pride
From the dock he waved goodbye
As his wife and child cried

Dont worry, he assured his wife
With the slightest smile
How long can this war last?
Ill only be gone a while

He bid farewell with the promise
That he would be home soon
And with a goodbye kiss
He boarded the pontoon

Many letters came to her
Each held a different story
Tales of the bitter loss
And tales of the glory

He wrote of trenches damp and cold
And ridden with disease
How sometimes death was the only way
To put a survivors pain at ease

War was not the easy path
To fame and honour hed been told
It was a treacherous struggle
That left a mans soul cold

As weeks soon turned into months
The news was only bad
She feared that fateful letter
Telling her shed lost all that she had

But the letter never came
Infact. None did come at all
Had her husband been captured
Or did he simply fall?

But then, one day, 8 months had passed
She received a letter all alone
And on it, four words that hit her hard
I am coming home

Eagerly at the docks she stood
Amid the nervous crowd
All hopeful for the return of ones they loved
None game enough to speak the worst aloud

Until at last, she spied him
And with tears in her eyes
She leapt into his open arms
And together they both cried

She looked around her and she saw
A sad yet happy sight
Wives rejoicing their husbands return,
Yet many doomed to lonely nights

There were many tears shed that day
Both of joy and grief
For hours some remained behind
In hopeful disbelief

So many children would grow up
And never know their dad
While others would live normal lives
And never fully appreciate what they had..
