Dark nightmares complete poem

by beth   May 24, 2006

Shadows dancing in the night
creeping creeping around the light
always silent, never heard
dark shapes move across the wall
up the stairs, down the hall
to every room they creep, they slink
they never sleep not a wink
creatures, figures, all creations of a fearful mind

they are dreams and lost thoughts
all rejected forgotten, and unloved
hiding in a dark corner
recesses of your mind
are they real or make believe?
thoughts made from fear and sorrow
figures floating around the room
eyes and laughter wrapped up in darkness
or are they only nightmares?

Secrets and fears are all released into the night air
is this too much for you to bear?
they dance and sing their sorrowful tune
to each other and the moon
cold breezes that feel like something breathing
breathing down the back of your neck
leaving all of your nerves a wreck
you try to act strong but inside you're weak
though strength is all you seek

they dance and sing and creep around
through the night like a lost blood hound
nightmares and fears all take shape
secrets and losses all unburied
always the same, always unvaried
making it so hard to sleep at night
trying to make all of the wrongs seem right
filling your dreams to the brim with fright

dark eyes burning with an evil red fire
burning, burning like a phoenix on a funeral pyre
black cloaked figures standing here and there
glowing red eyes shining everywhere
long lost love laced with tragedy
crowned with a dark misunderstood Majesty
broken thoughts begin to fall
as life and death embrace us all

dark wings are all a flutter
voices heard in a whisper and a mutter
as they watch the tears of sorrow and fear flow
their strength and souls forever grow
they laugh and dance watching you fall apart
for they live without a heart
they tease and taunt and cause you pain
until you think you'll go insane

They tease and howl all through the night
but you see they don't feel it's right
it's not their fault they hurt and taunt
if they had a choice your dreams they would not haunt
these creatures are under control of a higher being
they have thoughts and feelings of no meaning
or so they were told
they have nothing special to hold

dark creatures roam through halls alone
they have no friends, they have no home
their cries of pain and sorrow echo
echo through night's endless halls
their pain and anguish come out as ghostly calls
the shadowy figures only know how to cause pain
because that is all they have felt
all they love is in vain

they used to be loving and caring creatures
but their wings have gone from white to black
they are forced to haunt through the night
until the morning's first new light
these once beautiful angels now have fell
now they live a life of hell
although the dark dragons watch you bleed
blood is not what they truely need

Now you know how they feel
their wounds will never mend, scars never heal
so they haunt and dance through the night
until the dawn's early light
they wait in sorrow and pain
their tears falling like the rain
the creatures of the night wait
until the night opens its dark gate

shadows dance in the night
creeping, creeping around the light
not too slow, not too fast
every night until some day, one day
they are released at long last
and an angel sings a requiem
a sad lament just for them
to put them to rest out of their misery
for all of time and eternity
until that day they run through the night
running free until morning light.
