American Soldier, American Son
Where will you be when this war is done?
American Soldier, American Son
I once held you in my arms, shielding you from the world's harms.
Then you struggled for me to let go, you wanted to walk on your own.
You started slowly, then you began to run, oh my precious son.
I tried to keep you close to me, but I knew you wanted to be free.
You were so ready to be a man, I wanted you to keep holding my hand.
Time pressed on and I let go, I watched as you began to grow.
American Soldier, American Son.
Where will you be when this war is done?
American Soldier, American Son.
Now I wait and try to not look back, wish you were home from Iraq.
I struggle and choke back tears, don't want you to know my deepest fears.
I hear your voice, can almost see your face, praying you stay safe.
CNN reports bombings and IED's, another mother's son - a casualty.
I get so scared I can barely breathe, wondering why you just can't leave.
Yet, I'm proud, you've become a man, you did good, took a stand.
American Soldier, American Son.
Where will you be when this war is done?
American Soldier, American Son.
I wonder sometimes what you feel inside, do you ever cry?
Another day in dry parched land, I pray God holds you tight in His hand.
What do you think about all this, what's your deepest wish?
I don't know sometimes how to go on, this wait is just so long.
It's hard to understand at all, what makes you tick and answer the call?
You're so brave, but it's like nothing to you, just a job to do.
American Soldier, American Son.
Where will you be when this war is done?
American Soldier, American Son.
Everyday I'll wait for this war to end, praying I'll see you again.
So when this war is done and the last bomb dropped and human shot,
You'll whisper a bittersweet goodbye, a hidden tear in your eye.
God Bless America, Land of the Free
God Bless blood shed in the name of victory.
American Soldier, American Son.
