The evergreen maple leaf

by Seth Eckel   Jul 5, 2006

I'm here waiting on the sidelines
I feel like a spectator
But want to be put in the game
I want to feel the pain and I want to go insane
I want to feel the rush because watching is not enough
I want to know why and put into action what I feel inside
I have to see what you see in them and not in me
I'll change one day you wait and see
We'll see whose the lucky one; you or me
I just want to know why
Why them/him
But not me
Sure I'm not the most beautiful leaf on the tree
But we'll see who lasts the longest when the wind comes a blowing
When the wind comes a blowing amongst the mid summer air
Sit and watch which one will stay there
When the climate changes and everyone is gone
You will have realized who was wrong
The evergreen maple leaf is I who is still there

A hockey allegory? This is the best bit of the poem. After this the flow becomes disjointed and a little too pleading. But you end on quite a positive, emboldened note, which is great to see!
