Blood on Stone

by Sarah Playford   Jul 28, 2006

Sitting in the moonlight, alone by the graves
The warmth of a body, a feeling I crave.
The night singing brightly, the stars shining down
The tombs in the moonlight, a king with a crown.
I turn away quickly, walk away fast
Tormented and tortured, mocked by my past.
The wind softly whispers, the one that sees all
A knife in the darkness, a drowning deep fall
The fountain of blood as the blade cuts a throat
The secrets it covers; the corpse in the moat.
I stop and stand staring; this cannot be!
The sight by the tombstones, an echo of me.
There stand two lovers, intertwined to the last
The future forever, tied up with the past
He, he will leave her, and she all alone
Will return here to weep; this place that they owned.
And there a tall stranger will watch her and guard
Against nightly threats; for him not too hard
â??I hate him I hate him I hate him!â?? sheâ??ll say
Then heâ??ll have won; that guard every day.
From out of the shadows he will melt and appear
Take her hand to his heart and say in her ear
â??I who have long watched you weep from afar,
Can take you away, can heal your deep scar.
Just come with me and you will fly away free
Your life has no meaning, give in to me.â??
His lips will touch hers and up she will stand
Caught from the moment he took hold of her hand.
She needing love throws back her head with a cry
Her throat now exposed, he wastes no more time.
His teeth will sink deep into that milky-white skin
A drinker of souls, she becomes just like him.
Blood lust will take her, her soul finds no rest
Doomed ever to wander, and dark places infest.
â??That must not happen; I cannot allow
She will learn from my pastâ?? I determinedly vow.
Brushing through shadows, approaching downwind
The moonlight shines brighter, the stars seem to dim.
The glorious scent of the bright loversâ?? skin
The sound of their hearts beating and beating; a din!
A slave to my hunger, I start to breathe slow,
Unaware of the stalker, their innocence glows.
But sweeter then all through the long twisted night
Was the blood on the headstones, sparkling and bright.
