A Game We Played

by kathy   Mar 23, 2004

All if fair in love and war,
That's what they always say.
But those words don't take meaning
IN the game we play
It's a game where we would pick a kid
Left out of the crowd
Then we would make fun of him
Saying jokes and laughing out loud
But we were too young to know
That those words brought so much pain
To one specific boy in school
And those words brought so much shame
You see he didn't have many friends
No one got too near him
And no one took the time;
To say "hello," and listen
This went on for quite some time
This teasing didn't end
But it went so deep into his heart
A wound too big to mend
After a while he stopped coming to school
Though no one really cared
But there was a time that everyone noticed
For his empty seat was too much to bare
People questioned and wondered why
This boy never showed up anymore
It seemed like people became scared for a minute
Then it seemed like coming to school became a chore
No one ever really found out why he never came back
Though of course I knew the truth inside
First it was easy to cover up
But then it seemed like it didn't want to hide
You see this boy was sick
His sickness could not be cured
And how long his life would last,
Not even the finest doctors were sure
So the way he was treated
The way we sued to act
Really afected the life of one kid
And thinking about it is like taking a slap
He passed away
that dreadful year
to think about it
Still brings a tear
We learned more about him
on the day of his passing
The eulugy was spoken quickly
But those words were ever lasting
They spoke about this one kid
This very special boy
And how he tried throughout his life
To give out a sort of joy
Everyone cried that day
There was no dry seat.
But the feeling in the room,
Held a specific Beat.
All is fair in love and war,
That's what they used to say
But those words never took meaning
in the game we used to play.
